  • Stranded Whale 'Alive' On Hunstanton Beach

Sealife experts are trying to help a 14m sperm whale stranded on Hunstanton beach but say chances of rescuing the mammal are slim, with the tide still three hours away.

Councillor Kate Dunbar says people are pouring water on the mammal to try to make it comfortable.

The high tide is expected to be the only opportunity to refloat the whale - but is not expected until about 2.45pm.

"They've used a digger and dug a hole in the sand, the water has been welling in it and people have been back and forth with buckets of water to pour over the whale to make it more comfortable. It's a very sad sight," Ms Dunbar told Sky.

  • Whale Stranded On Norfolk Beach Has Died

A sperm whale stranded on a beach in Norfolk has died despite efforts to save it.

A spokesman for British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said the giant mammal died at about 8pm on Thursday.

Sealife experts had been trying to help the whale on a beach at Hunstanton by splashing it with buckets of water to ease its discomfort.

Organ failure was a major risk as its immense weight - normally supported by the sea - can damage its insides.

Its chances of survival had not been good, experts said.

  • Tragic sperm whale dies after day-long battle on British coast: 24 gentle giants from the same North Sea pod have now perished

The 30-tonne bull, which was alive when it was found beached at Hunstanton in Norfolk at around 7.30am, died shortly after 8pm despite desperate attempts to save its life. The 46ft-long male was left stranded 1.5 miles from the sea after the tide went out this evening. Rescuers had hoped it would be able to swim back out during high tide at 2.50pm but it was unable to right itself. The 30-tonne mammal (pictured main this evening) is the 24th whale from the same pod to have died on the North Sea coastline in the past month. Pictured inset, animal lovers held a vigil on the beach tonight.

Perhaps there is some sort of device that can be created to deter whales from coming so close to the coasts?

  • Another Whale In Trouble Off Norfolk Coast

Another whale has been seen thrashing about in shallow water off Norfolk's coast - the seventh such incident in recent weeks.

Although the whale is just 300 to 400 yards from the shoreline, rescuers have said the whale is still alive.

Mike Puplett, of the UK Coastguard, is urging locals to keep a safe distance from the scene.

He told Sky News: "They are well out of the area they should be and it is difficult to assume why they are coming ashore.
