Over the past two years, up to 60 cats have disappeared, only for some to turn up soon after: dead and mutilated. The killings appear to be the work of a deeply disturbed individual or individuals. The victims appear to have been lured from their home territories before being set about with a knife. Heads, paws and tails, in different combinations, have been cut off, or undersides slit from throat to groin, and the blood drained. Unsurprisingly, this calculated butchery - which often happens at night - has resulted in the coining of lurid titles for the perpetrator: the 'Croydon Cat Killer' or the 'Croydon Cat Ripper'.
