UK: Manhunt launched as 2 children's authors go missing from same area within 24 hrs of each other

A children's author was reported missing from her home yesterday- hours after another children's writer living nearby also disappeared.

Detectives today launched a manhunt for Natalya Shieff after she was reported missing.

The mysterious disappearance marks the second author search to be launched by officers in the area within the space of 24 hours, after Helen Bailey was reported missing on Sunday.

The two women live barely 15 miles apart and their sudden disappearances were reported the day after each other - prompting a major police hunt to find them.

Ms Shieff - whose profile page on LinkedIn describes her as a writer of poetry, music and children's books, as well as being a charity volunteer - was last seen leaving a gym on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the 38-year-old was last seen leaving the Fit4less gym in High Street, Hatfield, Herts., at around 1pm on Sunday.

She was described as being around 5ft 5ins tall, of thin build, and with dark brown shoulder length hair.

Is missing children's author doing an Agatha Christie? Echoes of crime queen's disappearance in 1926 after police say she may have gone into hiding to write in seclusion

deliberately – just as Agatha Christie did 90 years ago, it emerged yesterday.

Asked if the 51-year-old’s disappearance might have been intentional, Chief Inspector Julie Wheatley said: ‘That is certainly something we have considered.’

Yesterday marked the 11th day of Mrs Bailey’s disappearance – the same length of time Agatha Christie was missing.

The crime author drove from her home in Berkshire in December 1926 after kissing her daughter goodbye. Her car was later found abandoned near Guildford.

Public concern was so great that more than a thousand officers were involved in the search for her, along with Sherlock Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle.

She was eventually found under an assumed name in a hotel in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, claiming she did not remember what had happened to her.

The theory that Mrs Bailey – the author of 22 children’s books, including the popular Electra Brown series for teenagers – may have gone into hiding to write in seclusion is one of several being investigated by police.

Another is that the widow may have arranged to meet someone who got in touch through her bereavement blog, Planet Grief.

Officers also revealed yesterday that a lorry driver saw Mrs Bailey walking 11 miles from her Hertfordshire home on April 12, the day after she went missing.

Fiance 'drugged and suffocated children's author Helen Bailey, dumped her in a cesspit and murdered her beloved dog to make it look like she'd gone missing, to get his hands on her £4m fortune'

Ian Stewart, 56, pictured left with his fiancée and right today in court sketch, stashed Helen Bailey's body in a cesspit under their £1.5million home in Royston, Hertfordshire, and told police she had gone missing, St Albans Crown Court was told. Stewart also allegedly killed her beloved dachshund Boris, together inset, and threw him into the septic tank with her because she 'went nowhere without that dog'. The widower was to receive at least £1.8million from her £4million fortune as well as the £1.5million Royston property she died in and her second home on the Kent coast in Broadstairs, the court heard. Mrs Bailey, who created the Electra Brown and Daisy Davenport books for children and was reported missing by Stewart on April 15 last year, was killed in a 'cynically executed murder that had money as its driving motive', prosecutor Stuart Trimmer QC said. He was arrested in July and has today gone on trial accused of her murder, fraud, preventing lawful burial and perverting course of justice. He denies the charges.
