Rome's historic centre has been shaken by a strong earthquake which struck central Italy. The 5.4 magnitude quake hit near Visso, about 100 miles northeast of the capital, according to the US Geological Survey. Tremors were felt from Perugia in Umbria to Rome and the town of Aquila. There are no immediate reports of damage after the quake hit at a relatively shallow depth of six miles. It comes just two months after a devastating earthquake killed nearly 300 people and destroyed hilltop villages. http://news.sky.com/story/rome-shaken-after-earthquake-hits-central-italy-10633294

2 powerful quakes strike central Italy, tremors felt in Rome

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Marche region in central Italy, just hours after a 5.4-magnitude temblor damaged buildings and cut power lines across the area. Buildings across the region have been damaged, but so far, there have been no reports of fatalities.

The latest earthquake occurred 9.18 p.m., 71 km east of Perugia, with United States Geological Survey reporting it as a 6.0-magnitude temblor, and Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology saying it was 5.9-magnitude.

Villages badly damaged as quakes hit central Italy

Rome's historic centre has been shaken by two strong earthquakes which struck central Italy - just months after a quake in the same area killed hundreds.

One resident who lives near St Peter's Square said she "felt the apartment shaking and the walls cracking".

There were reports of panicked residents leaving their homes and rushing onto the streets.

Officials at the Foreign Ministry evacuated their building and a landslide forced a section of the Salaria highway north of Rome to close.

Series of powerful quakes strikes central Italy, tremors felt in Rome

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Marche region in central Italy, just hours after a 5.4-magnitude tremor damaged buildings and cut power lines across the area. Buildings in the region have been damaged, but there have been no reports of fatalities.

A series of powerful aftershocks between magnitude 4 and 4.9 struck the area about five hours after the first tremor.

The strongest earthquake occurred 9.18 p.m. on Wednesday, 71 km (44 miles) east of Perugia. The United States Geological Survey reported it as a 6.0 magnitude temblor, while Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said it was a 5.9.

'It's apocalyptic, our town is finished': Terror in Italy as TWO powerful earthquakes strike within just two hours of each other - leaving terrified people 'screaming in the street in darkness'

Rescuers are searching in darkness and heavy rain after two powerful earthquakes hit an area of central Italy, knocking out power and sparking panic.

A quake - known in Italian as a terremoto - measuring 5.4 at 7.10pm local time shook buildings as far away as the capital, Rome, 80 miles away.

Two hours later a strong aftershock pulverised buildings which had already been weakened by the earlier tremor.

Some buildings have collapsed, a motorway has been closed and many people in the countryside were plunged into darkness as the power was knocked out.

But the head of Italy's civil protection agency, Fabrizio Curcio, said so far they had only heard of one fatality - a 73-year-old man who died of a heart attack.

He said some people were treated for slight injuries at hospitals in the regions of Umbria and Le Marche.
