Evacuation of Essex village of Jaywick to begin on Friday

The village of Jaywick in Essex is to be evacuated due to potential flooding caused by rain and strong winds.

Police officers are calling at homes to warn the village's 4,665 residents of the evacuation, which will start at 7am on Friday.

A rest centre has been set up for use until homes "are deemed safe to return to".

Chief inspector Russ Cole said: "This decision has not been taken lightly and has been made in the best interests of all residents to ensure their safety until the severe weather passes."

Now it's snowing in LONDON! Rush-hour chaos with Canary Wharf station evacuated due to flooding, flights cancelled and troops put on standby as high tides threaten to inundate Essex coast

Flights have been cancelled, towns evacuated and there is chaos on the roads as the Big Chill swept across Britain today, bringing eight inches of snow and 93mph hurricane-force winds.

British Army soldiers are on standby as the horrific weather is set to last for three days and has already caused travel disruption and crashes in Scotland and northern parts of England.

Heathrow Airport has been forced to cancel 80 flights as the adverse weather reached the South East. Four British Airways flights from Gatwick Airport have also been cancelled.

Snow has begun falling across London and the south east and stricken commuters were left stranded at rush hour this evening as Canary Wharf tube station closed due to flooding caused by heavy rain.

Around 35 flood warnings, calling on residents to take 'immediate action', and 55 flood alerts have been issued for the entire east coast of England. The temperature is also set to plummet below freezing overnight tonight.

In Essex, the town of Jaywick, near Clacton-on-Sea, and Colchester have been evacuated due to fears of flooding.

Around 100 soldiers have been drafted into Lincolnshire tonight, working with police to help 3,200 properties vulnerable to flooding over the next 24 hours.

And why doesn't London do a bit more to prepare, or the other places? This doesn't seem uncommon, yet every year the same trouble seems to happen

Police defend 'overhyped' decision to evacuate thousands of families ahead of a storm surge that never happened as it emerges NO ONE attended a rescue centre set up to help those told to flee

Police have defended their decision to evacuate thousands residents in Essex after people complained the severe weather warnings were an 'overkill'.

A total of 2,500 homes were evacuated in Jaywick, Essex, last night and hundreds of people were taken to a temporary evacuation centre after the Environment Agency (EA) issued 17 severe warnings - which warn of danger to life - to Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.

But in the early hours of Saturday, the remaining residents were told they could return to their homes after there were no signs of flooding.

Essex Police said the centre in Clacton saw 230 residents at its peak - but no one visited another site in West Mersea, which had severe flooding.
