Suspect in deadly Kim Jong-nam attack says she got $90 for 'prank'

The Indonesian woman who is one of the suspects in the killing of North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un's half brother said she was paid $90 for what she believed was a prank, an Indonesian official said Saturday.

Siti Aisyah, 25, also told authorities she did not want her parents to see her in custody, Andriano Erwin, Indonesia's deputy ambassador to Malaysia, said one day after Malaysia revealed that VX nerve agent was used in the bizarre killing at Kuala Lumpur's airport.

"She doesn't want her family get sad to see her condition," Erwin said after a 30-minute meeting with Aisyah. "She only delivered a message through us to her father and mother not to be worried and take care of their health."

The public poisoning of Kim Jong-nam, which took place Feb. 13 amid crowds of travellers at the airport, appeared to be a well-planned hit. Kim was dead within hours of the attack, in which two women went up behind him and appeared to smear something onto his face.

The photograph is too well balanced for a random shot. Note the positioning of the shadowy figures, how his hand is raised right below the light and how the signs are geometrically placed... plus the colouring it's all black, white and red, with a hint of the yellow shade we see in so many images from "terror events" such as the French Concert Hall.

  • Kim Murder Suspect Says She Was Paid $90 To Rub VX Toxin On His Face

In the latest turn of increasingly more bizarre events leading up the death of North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un's half brother, who as revealed late last week had been poisoned with the deadly VX nerve agent, the arrested Indonesian woman who is one of the suspects in the killing said she was paid $90 to apply a baby oil-like liquid to his face in what she believed was a "prank."

Siti Aisyah, in her first meeting with Indonesian officials after more than a week in detention said Saturday she didn’t know that the substance—subsequently identified by police as a banned, lethal nerve agent known as VX—was poisonous. Police believe Ms. Aisyah and another woman, Doan Thi Huong of Vietnam, applied the chemical to Mr. Kim’s face on Feb. 13 in a three-second assault at Kuala Lumpur International Airport that was orchestrated by a group of North Korean men. Mr. Kim died shortly afterward. Aisyah told Indonesian officials she thought she was playing a prank as part of a reality show.

According to Indonesian officials, Aisyah told authorities she did not want her parents to see her in custody. "She doesn't want her family get sad to see her condition," Indonesia's deputy ambassador to Malaysia, Andriano Erwin said after speaking to the suspect. Erwin said Aisyah told Indonesian officials that men with Japanese or Korean appearances, and names name like James and Chang, asked her to carry out the act, and that she was paid about 400 Malaysian ringgit ($90).

As the WSJ adds, until several years ago, Aisyah, a 25-year-old from a small town in western Java, was working at a clothing store at a mall in Indonesia, making about $200 a month. But she has traveled extensively in Asia since then, people with knowledge of the matter told the Journal.

The other woman of Vietnamese origin, who was also arrested as a murder suspect, also said she thought she was taking part in a prank video, Vietnam's foreign ministry said on Saturday according to Reuters. Hanoi had not previously confirmed that Doan Thi Huong was Vietnamese, saying only that it was in touch with authorities in Malaysia, where Kim Jong Nam was murdered on Feb. 13. Vietnamese embassy officials met her on Saturday.

"Her health is stable. During the meeting with embassy officials, Doan Thi Huong said she was being taken advantage of and thought she was starring in a comedy video," the foreign ministry statement said.

While both Aisyah, 25, and Huong have said they were duped into the attack, Malaysian police say she and the other female suspect, a Vietnamese woman who also is in custody, knew what they were doing.

I wonder how she managed not to get ill handling this stuff with her bare hands?

Perhaps there's a red herring in the picture?  Naturally, even if its impossible we believe because we have images of two girls said to be the perpetrators.  If the substance is a WMD how could they live if it was on their bare hands even if they washed it off it clearly absorbs rapidly.  There had to be time to apply it and then walk up to him and smear it then rush to the washroom and wash it off.  As they thought it was a prank would the women seriously have washed their hands the same way a nurse or doctor would scrub up? Who's to say Kim Jong Nam didn't acquire the poison elswhere prior to the women approaching him with maybe "fake" stuff on their hands?

Remember, VX is a binary agent.  Either part by itself isn't harmful.  If one woman smeared one part on his face and the other woman smeared a second part, they would be combined on his skin.

The reports only talk about one of the women getting ill.  I'll bet it was the second woman.  She's the one who could have inadvertently come into contact with a small amount when she applied the second part of the formula.

If the politicians treat people this poorly when they're armed to the teeth,

just imagine what they'll be willing to do once they've disarmed everyone.

    That's interesting. Thanks tazweiss

  • Indonesian envoy: Siti Aisyah thought it was baby oil

PETALING JAYA: The Indonesian woman suspect in the murder of Kim Jong-nam said she was "hired" by two men to carry out a "prank" on the North Korean.

Indonesian deputy ambassador to Malaysia Andreano Erwin said Siti Aisyah (pix) claimed that the men, whom she named as James and Chan, "looked like Korean or Japanese."

Andreano, who was allowed to meet Siti Aisyah for half an hour at the lockup in Cyberjaya police station on Saturday, said she was paid RM400 to carry out the prank for a reality show in Malaysia.

He said Siti Aisyah claimed that she did not know that the liquid - which she thought was baby oil - she was given to swab on Jong-nam's face was poisonous.

On her connection to Vietnamese suspect Doan Thi Huong, Andreano said that Siti Aisyah claimed she did not know her.

"Siti Aisyah is in healthy condition," Andreano told reporters, adding that they were waiting for developments in the police investigations.

Officials from the Vietnam embassy were also seen at the station. They did not make any comments.

Jong-nam, 45, half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was killed in KL International Airport 2 on Feb 13 while waiting for a flight to Macau.

On Friday, police said the chemical used by two women to wipe on Jong-nam's face was the highly toxic VX nerve agent, classified as a chemical weapon under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

  • If the women were approached by the two men who gave them the liquid in the airport there should be CCTV evidence of their identity.

Kim Jong-nam: VX dose was 'high and lethal'

    • From the section Asia
Media captionCCTV footage appears to show the moment Kim Jong-nam is attacked

Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korea's leader, was given a very high amount of the toxic nerve agent VX and he died in pain within 15-20 minutes, Malaysia's health minister says.

No antidote would have worked, said Subramaniam Sathasivam.

Mr Kim died two weeks ago after two women accosted him in a check-in hall at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

They say they thought they were doing a TV prank. North Korea denies killing the high-profile critic of the regime.

Who could be behind the attack?

Unravelling the mystery of Kim Jong-nam's death

VX is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations. A drop on the skin can kill in minutes.

Indonesian national Siti Aisyah, 25, one of two women held, told Indonesian embassy officials that she was given 400 Malaysian ringgit ($80; £72) to smear Kim Jong-nam's face with "baby oil" as part of a reality show joke.

Doan Thi Huong, a Vietnamese national born in 1988, has also said she thought she was taking part in a television prank.

Malaysian police say the attackers had been trained to wash their hands immediately after the attack.

Some experts have suggested that they might have each smeared two different non-lethal elements of VX, which became deadly when mixed on Mr Kim's face.

Wouldn't training in washing hands immediately after the attack have give a small hint to most people that the substance wasn't baby oil ?

I honestly wonder how much of this is even true. The police are giving us all this info, after all.
