Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt said the current establishment ploy of painting eurosceptics as ill educated and irrational was “not a sound strategy” and would only accelerate the break-up of the liberal world order.
Instead he urged euro elites to directly challenge populist leaders, rather than name-calling their millions of supporters, by arguing that many of their promises on immigration and sovereignty are undeliverable in the modern world.
He said: “Belittling the people who voted for Brexit, Trump, and their European equivalents is not a sound strategy.”
