A giant meteor streaked over West Texas on Sunday nightCop car captured the stunning event on dashcam videoSightings reported as far away as Aurora, Colorado, 700 miles awayCreated rare sonic boom, heard in less than 1 per cent of meteor sightings

A stunning meteor large enough to create a rare sonic boom streaked over the skies of Texas on Sunday, with a lucky police officer capturing footage of the event on a dashboard camera.

Officer Tiffany Vanzant of the Weatherford, Texas police department was driving in the town on the outskirts of Fort Worth when she spotted the meteor streaking overhead around 8.55pm.

Even closer to the meteor's estimated trajectory, Texas resident Lauren Modery was driving between Amarillo and Lubbock when the fiery ball blazed through the sky.
