NEW ERA: Congress told to brace for 'robotic soldiers'

Matt_ADMIN_Matt_ADMIN_ Administrator

House lawmakers were warned Wednesday that artificial intelligence could soon be used by potential adversaries in military operations.

Jason Healey, a senior fellow on the Atlantic Council’s Cyber Statecraft Initiative, told members of a House panel with oversight of the Pentagon that he expects the capabilities to be developed in the next decade.

“There has been lot of speculation … about how soon it will be before robotic soldiers take the place of the fight in the kinetic world,” Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas) asked the panel of cyber experts. “How soon will A.I. supplant the need … for all these human beings to be able to defend these networks and do what we do?”

Healey answered that he expects the capability to be developed more quickly than anticipated.

Peter Singer, a strategist at the New America Foundation, said that artificial intelligence is among potential “disruptions” being developed in the realm of cyber conflict.

If you take the humans out of war, you take the horror out of war.  Without those consequences the elite will become even more inclined to view it as a game.  Without those consequences the elite will be even more inclined to target the civilian population to get their point across.

When AI's take over the business of war, they will have to become more and more aggressive and less and less likely to show the quality of compassion.  When we give the power of life and death to machines, we start to forge the chains for humans.

If the politicians treat people this poorly when they're armed to the teeth,

just imagine what they'll be willing to do once they've disarmed everyone.

Drones are an example of war without compassion.  The person controlling the drone from an office perhaps thousands of kms away probably views any resultant killing without any compassion at all as it would be akin to a video game.

I have actually heard that drone pilots tend to suffer from PTSD as much as the troops on the ground.  Because the drones are equipped with high resolution cameras that let the pilot witness the effects of their actions, they become traumatized by what they see, knowing they caused it.

Touching upon what Taz and Rosie have said, I read once about the weird psychology that begins to develop when a drone pilot drops bombs, and then an hour later is home for dinner with his family. Quite the transition.
