Brussels crumbling? Verhofstadt warns of EU 'CRISIS' amid Brexit 'DISASTER'

Lynsey_ADMIN_Lynsey_ADMIN_ Administrator

BREXIT has left MEPs and eurocrats fearing for the future of the European Union, with a key Brussels figure warning the bloc is in “crisis” in the wake of Britain’s historic EU referendum decision.

Guy Verhofstadt, who is the European Parliament’s lead Brexit negotiator, described the vote as a “disaster” for the EU, claiming it is important for all parties to reach a successful arrangement.

Theresa May attended her final EU summit before she is expected to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, afterwards spelled out her desire to get down to business and begin Brexit negotiations with Brussels.

Mr Verhofstadt, however, warned his European Parliament colleagues will have the power to veto any deal between the UK and EU which is presented to them.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, the Belgian politician said: “The fact that a big country like Britain is leaving the European Union, I think the most negative fallout from this brexit referendum has not been, for now, economically.

'Brexit is only a tragedy for the EU - as WE pay for it' Anger over Verhofstadt R4 speech

BREXIT negotiator Guy Verhofstadt has been blasted after describing Britain’s decision to leave the European Union (EU) as a “tragedy” and vowed to help Britons keep Brussels benefits.

The former prime minister of Belgium was criticised after he claimed he has received thousands of letters from UK citizens who do not want to turn their back on “European civilisation”.

Broadcaster and journalist Julia Hartley-Brewer tweeted: "The European Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt is quite right: Brexit IS a 'tragedy'. For the EU. #wepaymostofthebills."

Ukip's Nigel Farage added: "Guy Verhofstadt using European nationalism to try and destroy the nation state. Divisive and wrong."

Mr Verhofstadt said he would try to convince European leaders to allow British citizens to keep various benefits of European Union membership if they apply individually.
