China Announces Plans to Turn Over 800,000 Hectares of Farmland to Ecosystem Restoration Project

China will turn more than 800,000 hectares of marginal farmland into forests or grassland this year, a government work report said Sunday.[Special coverage]

China will begin to pilot projects to improve the quality of forests and restore ecosystems along the Yangtze Economic Belt, according to the report to be delivered by Premier Li Keqiang at the opening meeting of the parliament's annual session.

It said China will launch the second group of trial projects to conserve the ecosystems of mountains, forests, farmland, rivers and lakes.

  • I understand "marginal farmland" to mean land that has been cultivated many times without any care to keep the soil in good shape.  In other words, the areas are pretty much depleted for farming benefit at this point.  Letting the land return to nature seems like a good thing to do.

Unfortunately, 800,000 hectares isn't all that much when you consider that there are around 111 Million hectares of farmland in China.  Still, a good step in the right direction.
