Jeremy Corbyn's deputy has claimed the party's future has been put at risk by the prospect of a hard Left takeover.
Tom Watson said there was a real threat to Labour's existence from the Corbyn supporters' group Momentum seeking to get union backing.
A fresh round of infighting was underway on Monday after Mr Watson said he was "deeply shocked" by a recording of Momentum leader Jon Lansman discussing how the country's biggest union, led by Len McCluskey, could affiliate with his group.
In the leaked recording, Mr Lansman issues a call to arms to Momentum supporters saying they need to make sure the Left is represented in key positions at all levels in the party.
Supporters of Mr Corbyn are said to be seeking influence within key committees in the party, in order to secure a change in party rules which would help a left-wing MP to succeed him as leader.
