Mystery man with gun walked unchecked in Bourke Street mall in wake of massacre

  • From The Age

A man dressed in commando gear and carrying a semi-automatic gun was able to stroll unchecked through Bourke Street mall in the days following the massacre that killed six people.

The troubling security breach – which occurred when Victorians were told authorities were on high alert to ensure the safety of Melbourne's CBD – is now subject to a full police investigation.

Ambulance Victoria thanks the public after Bourke Street

In the wake of the Bourke Street tragedy, Ambulance Victoria has released a touching video thanking the "warm-hearted individuals and a compassionate community" in Melbourne.

Police were only alerted to the man's presence after Fairfax sent them an image of the armed man.

They refused to explain why he was not approached earlier or why he has not since been charged.

Interesting - there seem to be many of these "mystery men with guns" hanging about all these shootings around the world. Most then seem to vanish into thin air.

Equally amazing is the fact that so soon after a massacre within a short distance of this location, passers by aren't in the least troubled by such an ominous presence in their midst.   Do they accept him as a "good guy" because he's wearing dark clothes and a safety vest.  Not one person appears to be giving him a second glance. How could someone like that not be tracked back via CCTV in Melbourne's streets to his point of origin? Perhaps the scenario is a setup to gauge people's reaction.

I feel many such scenarios are set up for that precise purpose

I'm sure authorities must know who the man is.
    a) Gun licences are mandatory and linked to drivers licences
    b) Security staff have to be trained and licenced
    c) facial recognition should definitely be available for security personnel.
