Three blasts near Borussia Dortmund football team bus, club says bomb went off

A bomb went off near the bus of the German football team Borussia Dortmund as it prepared to leave the hotel for their home Champions League quarterfinal game, the team has said. Police have confirmed that three explosions occurred, but did not say what exactly caused them.

The club said in a twitter post that there was “a bomb blast”  close to the team bus, adding that the team players are now “in safety” and “no threat is posed to the stadium,” where the quarterfinal was due to take place.

“We can confirm that there were three explosions near the Borussia team bus,” police have announced.

Large police forces have been deployed to the scene, the law enforcement added.

The German team confirmed one of its players has been injured following the explosions 10km from the Signal Iduna Park stadium in Dortmund, North-Rhine Westphalia in east Germany.

The player is believed to be Spanish defender and father-of-one Marc Bartra, who has been taken to hospital.

He is thought to have suffered cuts to his hands from shattered glass after the bus' windows smashed.

Borussia Dortmund explosion confusion as Islamists and anti-fascists claim responsibility

EXPLOSIONS on a bus carrying Borussia Dortmund players may have been carried out by Islamist militants or anti-fascist protestors, sources have revealed.

A letter left near the scene of the attack claimed the atrocity was carried out in retaliation for German military reconnaissance missions against so-called Islamic State in Syria.

And it explicitly mentioned previous ISIS attacks on Europe - including the Berlin Christmas market attack.

But a German newspaper has suggested the letter could merely be a deliberate attempt to mislead investigators.

And recent media reports have since suggested police are also examining a second letter of responsibility from the "anti-fascist scene", Focus online magazine said on Wednesday.

ANTIFA, the left wing anti-Nazi group, reportedly claimed responsibility on the internet on Wednesday morning.

Borussia Dortmund team bus attack: 'Islamist' suspect held

Security is bolstered for tonight's game as letters claim sports stars and others "in crusader nations" are on an "IS death list".

An "Islamist" suspect has been detained by police investigating a bomb attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus.

"Two suspects from the Islamist spectrum have become the focus of our investigation. Both of their apartments were searched, and one of the two has been detained," said Frauke Koehle, from the federal prosecutor's office.

She said the explosives used in the attack contained metal pins - one of which buried itself into a headrest on the coach - adding it was lucky "nothing worse happened".

Three identical letters left at the scene of the blasts linked the attack to German involvement in the fight against Islamic State in Syria.

Borussia Dortmund bus attack suspect 'was Islamic State fighter'

The 26-year-old is believed to have led a commando unit involved in killings, kidnappings, smuggling and extortion in Iraq.

A man detained by police over a bomb attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus is believed to have been an Islamic State fighter in Iraq, German prosecutors said.

They have issued a formal arrest warrant for the 26-year-old Iraqi, who is currently in police custody after being detained on Wednesday following raids on two apartments.

The suspect is believed to have led a 10-strong commando unit involved in killings, kidnappings, smuggling and extortion in Iraq.

First Far Left.. then ISIS now Far-right claims responsibility for Borussia Dortmund blasts

German media report far-right groups have threatened another attack after three blasts targeting the Bundesliga team's bus.

Prosecutors are investigating a third claim of responsibility for explosions that hit Borussia Dortmund's team bus, according to reports.

Three bombs containing pieces of metal detonated minutes after the bus left the team's hotel for a Champions League match against Monaco.

On Saturday, the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported it had received a claim of responsibility apparently from far-right groups, who were hit out at multi-culturalism and threatened another attack.

Frauke Koehler, a spokeswoman for federal prosecutors who was referring to an email received by the newspaper, said: "We have the letter claiming responsibility. We are examining it."

Several claims have already been investigated, but no suspects have been identified.

Explosives in Dortmund bus attack could have come from German military – report

The explosives used in the attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus may have come from the German military, local media report, citing sources close to the investigation.

Around 100 investigators from the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) are looking into the incident, one of whom spoke to the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Saturday.

“The explosives in the pipe bombs, which were filled with metal pins, might have come from the stocks of the Bundeswehr [German armed forces], but that’s still being checked,” the newspaper quoted the anonymous investigator as saying.

The source added that specialized training was needed to use the military detonators, which are hard to acquire.

A spokeswoman for the federal public prosecutor’s office declined to comment on the newspaper’s claims.

Borussia Dortmund team bus attack suspect motivated by 'financial greed'

Officials arrest a man they say was hoping to make millions from a fall in the club's share price as a result of the bombing.

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of carrying out the bomb attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus - and believe his motive may have been financial.

Rather than any link to Islamist terrorism, they say the suspect, identified only as Sergej W, had speculated on Dortmund's share value falling after the bombing.

Spain international Marc Bartra and a police officer were injured in last Tuesday's triple blasts as the players and coaching staff left a hotel ahead of a Champions League match in Germany.

Prosecutors say the suspect, who was held on Friday, bought a large number of so-called "put" options which would have entitled him to sell 15,000 shares at a pre-determined price - resulting in a substantial profit if their value fell.

"A significant share price drop could have been expected if a player had been seriously injured or even killed as a result of the attack," they said.

They traced the computer used to purchase the put options to the hotel the team were staying at and said he had booked a room there himself.

Ralf Jaeger, the top security official in North Rhine-Westphalia state, said the suspect had hoped to earn millions.

"The man appears to have wanted to commit murder out of greed," he said.

The 28-year-old suspect, who has dual German and Russian citizenship, faces charges of attempted murder, causing an explosion and inflicting serious bodily harm.

Three identical letters were found at the scene, linking the attack to German involvement in the fight against Islamic State in Syria. But there were doubts over their authenticity.

A fourth letter posted online also claiming responsibility, which could have come from anti-fascists, was discounted by police too.
