    Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas has welcomed the early election call.

    She promised her party would present a "bold, positive vision for a different kind of Britain".

    She said: "At this election we will stand for an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few; a Britain that's open to the world and the protection of our precious environment.

    "We will stand up to the politics of hatred and division that is scarring our communities and give people across the country a chance to vote for a better Britain."

    EU leaders react to Theresa May's call for early General Election

    The president of the European Council Donald Tusk has compared the Brexit plot with that of a Hitchcock horror film.

    Theresa May has said her "reluctant" call for an early General Election is needed in order to secure stability ahead of negotiating Britain's exit from the European Union with Brussels.

    In reaction to the proposed 8 June ballot, the European Parliament's Brexit negotiator has said the election is a chance for Britons to show what EU relationship they want.

    On his Facebook page, Guy Verhofstadt wrote: "The UK election is an internal affair but clearly Brexit will be the key element of it.

    "This means there will be an opportunity for the UK citizens to express themselves on how they see the future relationship between their country and the EU.

    "As the EP Brexit negotiator, I will work with a new government for the best common future possible."

    President of the European Council Donald Tusk said the election was a Brexit plot twist worthy of master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock.

    He wrote on Twitter: "It was Hitchcock, who directed Brexit: first an earthquake and the tension rises."

    Resignations, outrage, optimism: MPs react to Theresa May’s call for snap general election

    Following Prime Minister Theresa May’s call to hold a general election on June 8, politicians of all parties took to Twitter to vent their frustration, rattle their sabers, and even resign outright.

    Reactions varied across the political spectrum.

    Labour MP Tom Blenkinsop announced he would not be running almost immediately after May’s announcement, citing “significant and irreconcilable differences” with his party’s leadership.

    Tory manifesto will guarantee end of free movement, UK to leave single market and no more meddling by Euro judges as May issues her cast-iron Brexit pledges

    Theresa May will place a triple lock on Brexit in the Tory manifesto to stop obstruction by diehard Remainers.

    Tory sources say she is set to include specific pledges to overcome opposition within her party and in the Lords.

    The manifesto is expected to commit the Conservatives to ending EU free movement and pulling out of both the single market and European Court of Justice.

    Senior Tories see the three measures as essential in delivering last year's referendum result.

    One insider said Tory Remainers would be required to sign up to the package, 'locking them in'.

    Including the pledges in the manifesto will also make it much harder for peers to block Brexit.

    Mrs May is expected to use the manifesto to ditch a number of high-profile policies from the Cameron era. Yesterday she left the door open to watering down – or even scrapping – Mr Cameron's flagship vow to spend 0.7 per cent of national income on foreign aid.

    Ministers refused to say whether the costly 'triple lock' on pensions will be retained, or whether the pledge to reduce net migration to the 'tens of thousands' will be kept when the manifesto is published in a fortnight. The move came as:

      • MPs voted by 522 votes to 13 to back a snap election on June 8;
      • Mrs May kicked off her campaign with a warning of a 'coalition of chaos' led by Jeremy Corbyn, Nicola Sturgeon and Tim Farron;
      • Downing Street moved to calm the row over Mrs May's refusal to participate in TV debates with Jeremy Corbyn;
      • Labour threatened to hit 1.6million higher earners with higher taxes;
      • George Osborne finally bowed to pressure to quit parliament;
      • Commons Speaker John Bercow said he would stand for another term;
      • Gisela Stuart, a prominent Leaver, led an exodus of Labour MPs choosing to quit rather than campaign for Mr Corbyn.

    If they spent less time using their platform to spread complete hatred towards other parties, whilst of course preaching political unity and peace.. then we may in the Future actually see the return of an opposition party in the UK..

    threatening & belittling voters has backfired for several years now, with the amount of seats lost in last election & referendum in the UK and outside, you would have thought this would have sunk in by now.. guess not

    Until then, keep going Labour, you are gaining Theresa May votes every-time you or your members open their mouths, just like you did with the Referendum
