Named only as Chelloug said: "There was a police van and the guy came in an Audi A80, an old grey Audi.

"He parked just behind the van and he got out with a Kalashnikov and I heard six gunshots.

"I thought they were firecrackers, because we all looked around the road and there was no-one.

"In fact, he was hidden behind the van and shooting at the police. I think he hit a policeman.

What we know about Champs-Elysees gunman as Paris home raided

Karim Cheurfi had previously been flagged as an extremist to authorities and had a conviction for shooting at two police officers.

The man police believe carried out the shooting on the Champs-Elysees in Paris was detained in February for threatening police and then freed, officials have said.

A police document obtained by the Associated Press (AP) identifies the address searched in the eastern Paris suburb of Chelles as the family home of Karim Cheurfi, a 39-year-old with a police record.

The Frenchman was convicted in 2003 of attempted murder in the shooting of two police officers.

Cheurfi was detained two months ago after speaking threateningly about the police but released for lack of evidence, according to two police officials, speaking to AP on condition of anonymity.

He had previously also been flagged as an extremist to French authorities, they said.

Paris shooting: 50,000 troops and police mobilised after Champs-Elysees attack

Security ramps up ahead of France's election, as it is revealed the attacker had threatened to kill police - but was let go.

More than 50,000 police and soldiers have been "fully mobilised" after the killing of a police officer in Paris - and days before the country's presidential election.

The attacker shot dead by police on the Champs-Elysees on Thursday evening is believed to be Karim Cheurfi, 39.

A property being searched in the eastern Paris suburb of Chelles is understood to be his home and three members of his family have been taken into custody.

Anti-terrorism prosecutor Francois Molins said that a note had apparently fallen out of Cheurfi's pocket that defended the Islamic State.

Mr Molins said Cheurfi had a long criminal record, including trying to attack police previously.

He added that Cheurfi had been arrested in February but released due to lack of evidence.
