American Psychiatrist Attempts to Sue Reddit over Negative Comments About his Practice in Japan

A Florida psychiatrist is suing the social news website Reddit, along with dozens of anonymous users, for defamation and libel over negative comments made about his practice, the Miami Herald reported.

Dr. Douglas Berger, who practices in Japan, says in the Florida lawsuit that critics accusing him of giving patients “the creeps,” misdiagnosing ailments and overprescribing drugs have cost him money and “countless employment opportunities,” according to the paper.

A Reddit thread titled, “PSA: Stay away from ‘psychiatrist’ Doug Berger,” surfaced on the website six months ago and has since garnered more than 160 comments, which are mostly negative, from users who go by pseudonyms.

Berger said he hopes to unmask the names of the anonymous users currently listed as “John Doe” in the suit. He recognizes that Reddit assumes no liability, the report said.

The psychiatrist also wants the court to force Reddit to remove the comments and search engines to delete the reviews from their search results.

Jeffrey Segal, a neurosurgeon and lawyer, told the paper that Berger might not have a case, given the fact that an “opinion is protected speech.”

The doctor, who is not licensed in Japan, offers "counseling" for significant fees, and refers people to a doctor who prescribes medication without proper examination.

Many people living in Japan who have sought him out for therapy or advice (there is a lack of psychiatrists in general here, and almost no one English-speaking except him) have been unhappy with alleged lack of interest, improper comments, general unprofessionalism, pill-pushing and emphasis on payments and penalties for failing to pay or cancelling.

Interestingly, it seems his case appearing in the news has caused him to dismiss the lawsuit.  Still, interesting to see yet another example of people trying to censor opinions by claiming them to be slander or libel.

Does anyone know of any similar examples?  It might be worth discussing.

Israel, the Zionists, and their supporters are an excellent example of that: any criticism is considered "anti-semitism", and so is any reexamination of history, and so is any action undertaken that doesn't comply with the Zionist cause. It's always been strange to me that white Westerners rise up in anger when minorities such as blacks behave as such by invoking accusations of racism and so on, but remain blind to the dangers of a particular segment of society acquiring total immunity as to their expressions, actions, and interpretations of history.

A second example is the Sandy Hook ordeal, and the "HONR Network" that essentially bullies individuals and groups into halting their investigations (or stifling even basic questions) by evoking emotion. This group of people went around threatening legal action against those on Youtube who posted investigative materials, and then somehow acquired all the personal information belonging to those people, which Youtube was supposed to protect, and published it online as a sort of shame/hit list. This goes for almost every questionable event these days: if you ask any questions, you're causing injury because you're apparently affecting the emotions of the participants. Youtube doesn't even bother now, and simply liquidates any channel that causes or has the potential to cause "emotional injury" - including our own.

Sam Gerrans, a fellow Quranist, wrote that we are living in an age of "denouncement", where emotional relativism has become the norm and weaponized. Every single expression is now an offence. The only justified expression on the part of an individual is one that benefits that individual, and whoever possesses the stronger denouncement, wins.

  • Those are good examples.  The patience required to deal with self-proclaimed victims is considerable, and definitely a challenge.
