Mr Verhofstadt frantically claimed the Spitzenkandidat – leading candidate – system destroys the public’s confidence in the European Union because they are not directly involved in the vote.
Under the system, each group in the European Parliament nominate a candidate for the role, with the job going to whichever party wins the most MEPs in the European election.
Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Mr Verhofstadt said the process can not be lost but must be improved.
“Spitzenkandidat, when there is a backroom deal inside a political party or between political parties, I can tell you people are not much involved in this,” he said.
