France’s right-wing opposition party Les Républicains was plunged deeper into crisis on Monday after an audio recording of its leader comparing president Emmanuel Macron’s France to a “dictatorship” was broadcast on the French television channel TMC.
In the recording obtained by TMC’s satirical show Quotidien, Laurent Wauquiez can be heard slamming France’s “inefficient” national assembly and excoriating centrist lawmakers during a seminar at a business school in the eastern city of Lyon last Thursday.
The hardline right-winger also said Canada’s prime minister poses as a “cool nice guy” and is “too mainstream”. He said: “The balance of power in France’s national assembly is an illusion. Do you really think lawmakers have the power to do anything? Have you seen the fools who represent Mr Macron’s Republic on the Move?
“They’re told what to vote for, and if they disagree with something they get bludgeoned. There is no balance of power in France. There is a dictatorship.”
